Human, All Too Human

Human, All Too Human is a book written by Friedrich Nietzsche. The English version was published in 1908 while the original German version was published in 1878. The title is a big giveaway to the contents as the book is all about the complexities of human nature. Nietzsche emphasizes how humans can represent many different concepts. They can be driven by personal inclinations and embody contradictions. He points out the error in determining what is right and wrong purely based off of what people believed previously. Especially at the beginning of the book, Nietzsche argues that inherited values are not pure truth, but human constructs.

A point of contention for some readers is when Nietzsche introduced the idea that explanations of the universe rooted in religion. He argues that it is just the result of humans coping with the unknowns and mysteries of existence by creating deities in order to comfort them, quelling those wondering thoughts. Following this, he emphasizes personal growth. He emphasizes the importance of being free from sorts of external validation and dogmas.

Nietzsche also brings upon a point that many think about today. He critiques the glorification of artists, lifting them up on a pedestal and disregarding any problematic aspects of their character. He states how the power of art is able to influence many in a positive or negative way.

Overall, I think this book is a decent read. It definitely can pose a completely different view for some, but it is interesting to read his reasoning as to why he believes what he does. Nietzsche always leaves you with something to think about.

  1. Hey Asmara, this book certainly seems like an interesting read. Writing as well as other forms of literature can be used for so many different purposes, including sharing your views with the world. Being able to create such a work of literature in which your opinions are honestly expressed is really valuable. Nietzsche seems like he had a lot of potentially unpopular opinions, but nevertheless still valid and worth reading to those who choose to. No one thinks exactly alike nor views the world in the same way, which is what makes everyone's thoughts so unique and makes the human race so complex. Even if some disagree with Nietzsche's writing, it is still important and significant that he published his perspectives with the world. Thanks for sharing, great post.
