Which one is better - the Good Omens book or the Good Omens show?

I've both read the book and watched both seasons of Good Omens. After finishing the book, I realized I never really mentally decided which one was better, or at least better-developed. So which one is better - the book or the show?

The book shows the side characters' personalities more effectively. Small interactions, like Adam naming his group of friends "The Them" or Anathema discussing the old use of the word "nice" with Adam, make the other characters feel more three-dimensional. In the show, a lot of these smaller and more natural character interactions are cut for time, but flattens side characters and leaves much less room for details. A lot of things that the book takes care to describe to make the world feel more complete are also cut out of the show.

the Good Omens TV show had Michael Sheen and David Tennant starring as the two main characters, Crowley and Aziraphale. The performances of these two actors, especially David Tennant, really shine as a highlight. They show the internal conflicts of the characters between saving Earth and aiding in destroying it, but still have subtle performances. The comedy also works a lot better in the medium of television, taking an almost mockumentary-like style in the first episode where they explain how the Earth came to be. The scale of Armageddon's disastrous effects can be shown well, seeing things like the Kraken ripping boats apart in the ocean, but this comes at the expense of smaller details and interactions that build the story.

I went back and forth trying to decide which one had more charm to it, which one I liked the characters more in, and which one I felt the impact of more. I believe the book is better because of the characters that get more depth and the attention to nuances, but they both feel even and consistent in quality, and I personally would recommend both.

  1. Hi Adrian, this is such a cool blog :D! I've not personally read the book, however, I find your analysis of the book / movie versions very interesting :D. In my experiences,I think most movies are not as touchy as the book (there was once this amazing book I came across, Between Shades of Gray, I was so excited when I figured there was a movie made for it, however, I...definitely did not find the movie as captivating as the book) I'm glad you were able to find shining spots from both versions :D

  2. Hi Adrian, this sounds super interesting! Personally, I've never watched Good Omens or like, have even seen any content surrounding the franchise (besides a few cosplays, but that isn't a very good portrayal) but I plan on watching it sometime soon after reading this post!
